Mountain in the Middle

It's Majestic Marvel Monday! Since Mondays can often be one of the tougher days of the week and for many, it means back to the daily grind, what better way to put a smile on your face than to marvel at His majestic wonders! I absolutely love photography! It is both a creative outlet and passion that brings me joy. So, each Monday, I will post at least one photo of God’s majestic marvels I’ve captured. See and be in awe of His creations and beauty!

I snapped this Mountain in the Middle at one of our favorite spots in Alaska. It’s a beautiful campground with an incredible view. Just a stop off the highway, with a large frozen lake, and grandiose mountains, there are few visitors in the winter. We often have this place all to ourselves, making it extremely quiet and peaceful. This place of solitude is where I can really feel the presence of God.

Elevation Sunset

We set out this past Saturday on a little day trip to check out a small town we had never been to. Feeling a sense of adventure, we figured it was time to see what this small town of Hope, Alaska, was all about. That’s right! The town is actually called Hope. With all the challenges we’ve come face to face with lately, it seemed especially fitting to explore this old gold rush town, but maybe not in the dead of winter. Our trip was stopped short, due to a 10-degree temperature drop and an extremely icy highway separating us from the our destination.

And while we were disappointed that we did not land in Hope, Alaska, this last weekend, God kept us safe. The town we hoped to reach was just that-a town. We know that our real hope is in the Lord and there will never be anything that can separate us from His love.

Heading back, I captured Elevation Sunset. As the sun dropped behind the peaks, hues of blue colored the mountains and shades of gray were swirled in the cloudy sky above.

No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 8:39

Lone and Charred

This past weekend, we took a risk, a turn down a mystery road leading to a beautiful overlook. Amongst a backdrop of several snowy peaks, there was this tree, Lone and Charred, standing after a terrible forest fire. It was one of the strong ones, a survivor.

Maybe you have been thrown into the fiery flames of life’s circumstances and you too, are a survivor. Let this be a reminder that God can still create beauty out of your life. Your story isn’t over yet!

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. -Isaiah 48:10

Mountains Posed

It was a very gray kinda day in Alaska, yesterday. How it reminded me so, of back home in Portland, where the skies are drab and the rain drizzles constantly. The temperatures warmed up, and the roads thawed making for a nice Sunday drive, however. And although I didn’t catch any sun or blue skies, these Mountains Posed for me.

The mountains will bring peace to the people, And the little hills, by righteousness.

Sundown Sunday

Alaska is truly God’s country and a photographer’s paradise. There’s no denying it. Even if I can only give you teeny glimpses of our Creator’s magnificent beauty in my photos, that is my hope.

Today’s photo, Sundown Sunday, was a shot I snapped as the sun was setting behind the peaks, leaving a golden glow in the sky. A bald eagle screeched moments before and took off in the opposite direction flying over the icy cold river. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to capture it. It was a beautiful sight, however.

Wispy Winterland was an image I shot while riding shotgun yesterday on our Sunday drive. With a little too much cabin fever, I needed a change of scenery-to take in our Creator’s beauty that we are so blessed to be surrounded by. Getting out-even for a short drive, does wonders to combat going stir-crazy during these long, frozen winters.

Billowy Bluffs was another “from the passenger window” shot I snapped, as my husband cruised down the highway at full speed. Although we’ve been here just over a year, the Alaskan landscape and God’s natural beauty still never ceases to amaze me. The towering mountains that surround us have a strength about them that reveal just how mighty our Creator is.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. -Psalm 147:5

An Angel and an Opportunity

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:19

We hit the road for an early echocardiogram appointment two days before Thanksgiving and low and behold, we found ourselves in the least expected situation. Stranded on an Alaskan highway in 7 degree weather, with snow blowing all around us in the most dangerous intersection of the 142 mile stretch of highway, at 7:30 a.m., was not on my agenda that morning. We had our day planned out, but other plans panned out. And it gave us yet another opportunity to trust our Heavenly Father. What could have turned deadly quickly in those frigid weather conditions, instead was a rescue by an angel.

As we sat there on the side of the road with no heat, trying not to panic, we wondered how soon a tow truck in this small rural town could deliver us to an auto body shop. In full survival mode, trying to figure out what went horribly wrong and how to get out of the elements-something miraculous happened. Lovely people-3 different cars to be exact-began to pull over asking if we were ok. My biggest priority was finding someone who could take us home so we didn’t freeze to death. And we did. A woman on her way to work at the local hospital agreed to drive us 20 minutes in the opposite direction on this dark, snowy morning. And while the day sure didn’t end there, God kept providing.

Shortly after arriving home, my husband, who stayed with the car, was able to get a tow to the auto repair shop about an hour later. Several hours after that, the bad news came that our engine in our only vehicle-a car, with only 36,000 miles on it, mind you, likely blew due to the fault of the auto repair shop who changed our oil recently. And, it didn’t stop there. The owner told us he wasn’t sure there was even a rental car available in town. But again, God provided. With a rental car, my husband was on his way home. Once home, he gave me the news that the auto shop would pay for our rental car through Thanksgiving until the following Monday and then “figure something out”. Once again, our faith muscles were tested, and again, He provided.

And not only did he provide physically, he provided a new perspective: that a disaster can be an opportunity. It’s all about perspective, really. We can look at an extremely trying situation as a nightmare, or we can see the silver lining and what God may be trying to teach us. Maybe a day gone awry is actually a blessing in disguise-a strengthening of our faith-a lesson in learning to trust our Creator more fully. As for our car, we are still waiting for answers. Several events followed leaving us even further in the dark, which I will write about in another post. For now, while we are still unsure when our vehicle will be fixed, we will continue to trust.

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. -Isaiah 41:13

River Frost was quickly snapped as the sun was setting over these Alaskan mountains along the Russian River. The pink glow reminds me of God’s light that is ever present and cannot be hidden. Like Him, let us shine our light for all to see so He can be forever glorified.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. -Matthew 5:14-16

Peaked Pano

I absolutely love photography! It is both a creative outlet and passion that brings me joy. So, each Monday, I will post at least one photo of God’s majestic marvels I’ve captured. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. -Romans 1:20

Peaked Pano was shot on another frosty Alaskan winter day. And while you can’t tell in this panoramic view, these ginormous mountains were literally right in front of us, with a small lake in between. I always tell people, “you haven’t seen mountains unless you’ve been to Alaska!” These big, beautiful mounds decorate the state with their bold, white caps and if you are blessed to get the chance to visit, one glance will leave you awestruck at how great our Creator is!
